Just a short drive from our luxury villa in Foligno is the town of Montefalco.Known as the " Borgho più bello d'Italia ", it is a historic town with typical Umbrian charm, with its narrow cobbled streets, stone buildings and trattorie where you can enjoy a good dish of truffles, typical of the region. Above all, Montefalco is one of Italy's wine centres. So spend a weekend discovering the intoxicating flavours of Montefalco's famous Sagrantino.
The town of Montefalco is an ideal base for visiting the region's vineyards. This is where Sagrantino is grown, a red grape variety with complex flavours that combine notes of spices, blackberries and dried plums. A DOCG (Denomination of Controlled Origin) nectar, this dry wine, aged for at least 30 years, including 12 in wooden casks, is highly prized by wine lovers and connoisseurs alike.
On a walk or cycle along the "Strada del Sagrantino", which passes through Montefalco, of course, but also the villages of Giano dell'Umbria and Bevagna, you can admire the vineyards as far as the eye can see, and why not stop off at a winery to enjoy a glass of Sagrantino di Montefalco.
Perfect with typical Umbrian meat dishes, such as lamb or Chianina beef with truffles, it is one of the ingredients of the typical risotto alla Montefalchese, which you can try in one of the town's restaurants.
You can visit Montefalco from Foligno, where your villa to rent is located, at any time of the year. September is the festival of the grape harvest, Festa della Vendemmia. Float parades, excursions, presentation of the new vintage and wine tasting - for 3 days you can familiarise yourself with one of the prides of this town in central Italy.
And while Montefalco in Umbria is famous for its wine, it's also the town of olive oil. Its olive groves produce an extra-virgin oil with an intense fruity and herbal flavour.
Montefalco is home to numerous relics that you can easily discover on a stopover from the VILLA ALLEGRIA in Foligno.Among these, the " ringhiera dell'Umbria " (or " Umbrian balustrade") is a belvedere overlooking the area, offering magnificent views by day and night.
Just a few minutes away is the Museo di San Francesco, which has been housed in a former church since 1895 and features frescoes depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, as well as works of art by local artists.
You can also get to the Porta Federico II, passing, of course, through the Piazza dei Comuni Montefalco, the town's historic centre. Lined by the town hall with its arches, it is also the ideal starting point for visiting the town's churches.
A stay in Umbria would not be complete without taking part in cultural events. While the grape harvest festival is a must, it would also be a shame to miss the Agosto Montefalchese e Fuga del Bove festival, which takes place in August and offers three weeks of musical parades in the piazza.
Whether you want to attend one of these events in Montefalco or simply treat yourself to a weekend of fun in the heart of Umbria, don't hesitate to contact us about renting a villa in Italy.
