If you're a lover of history, culture and architecture, Perugia is the place for you. The capital ofUmbria sits on an acropolis surrounded by medieval walls, where students, locals and tourists alike stroll and chat. This student city with its modern flair has nevertheless managed to retain all its uniqueness and soul, creating a charming blend.
To start your visit to Perugia, there's nothing like its historic centre. Here you can admire the symbol of the city: the Fontana Maggiore, built in Gothic style with its 24 statues. Piazza IV Novembre is also home to San Lorenzo Cathedral, with its Baroque portal and marble staircase. Inside, the Chapel of the Ring houses the Virgin Mary's wedding ring, on display only on 30 July! The Palazzo dei Priori is home to the National Gallery of Umbria.
A little further on is Perugia's medieval aqueduct and the Rocca Paolina. Of this fortress, like the Rocca Maggiore in Assisi, only part of the ramparts remain, including the Porte Marzia. Finally, the Giardini Carducci, accessible from the fortress by escalator, offer visitors to Perugia a green interlude in the heart of the city, as well as a remarkable view of the region.
However, the historic centre of Perugia in Italy is not the only stronghold of the city's historical and archaeological remains. Head further afield to the Sant'Angelo district, home to the University of Perugia and the circular church of Sant'Angelo, hence its nickname of " tempietto" (little temple).
On the other side of the city is the Basilica of San Domenico, the largest church in Umbria and home to funerary monuments, including that of Pope Benedict XI, frescoes and, of course, statues and paintings.
Then there's the sumptuous Basilica of San Pietro, with its impressive bell tower and a collection of works of art on a par with the National Gallery. And just outside, you can take a break from your visit to Perugia at the Giardini del Frontone, medieval gardens.
Umbria is a wine-growing region where the famous Sagrantino di Montefalco is produced. However, in Torgiano, on the outskirts of Perugia, you can visit the Wine Museum, which tells the story of this beverage that is the pride of the Italians. You can also enjoy a wine tasting at the Cantine Giorgo Lugarotti, also in Torgiano.
Finally, it would be a shame not to visit Lake Trasimeno. When you stand in front of this oasis, surrounded by the Palazzo Ducale and the Rocca del Leone fortress, the 40-minute drive will be well worth it.
Situated between Florence and Rome, Perugia is the beating heart of Umbria. Home to some of the finest works of art in central Italy, including the National Gallery and the Basilica of San Pietro, Perugia is a must for visitors to the region.
